A former US detainee says he was destroyed at Guantanamo Bay Prison and that Obama must apologize to torture victims and their families.
On January 22 US President Barack Obama officially signed executive orders to shut down the Guantanamo Bay detention center and outlaw torture.
However Mohammad Saad, a former Guantanamo Bay detainee called the decision “a mere whitewash” saying Obama must apologize to the prisoners, to their families and their societies.
“Can they (the Americans) return those seven years? Never. They have destroyed so many lives. They have turned intelligent, healthy human beings into vegetables,” said Saad.
In 2002 Mohammad Saad, a 24 years old university lecturer in Indonesia, was arrested after asking about the whereabouts of an American official.
Under US orders Saad underwent severe torture in Egypt, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay. The interrogation methods used were forced nudity, beatings, food and sleep deprivation, solitary confinement and electric shocks to his back and knees.
After six months in captivity, he attempted suicide and was subsequently relabeled as “non-compliant” by his captors.
In 2008, six years after he was arrested and four years after US investigators said they had no case against him, Saad returned home a broken man.
